Here’s what’s happening across all of our favourite marketing channels right now, and what that looks like for 2020!
Instagram: we love you, we love you, we love you.
And we will continue to love you in 2020.
(But after that, only time will tell.)
You’ve seen the algorithms changing and your posts receiving less organic reach as 2019 progressed.
That’s a bummer, but it doesn’t mean that it’s time to throw in the towel!
Post quality content (with the end user in mind, not the algorithm) and you’ll always win.
People hate ads, but they love quality content. They’ll search for it. They’ll share it. They’ll remember you for it.
As predicted, there’s a lot of magic to be found in stories and direct messages. If you’re showing up consistently in stories, keep it up!
If you’re not, it’s high time to hop aboard that bandwagon and join the rest of us.
Instagram is increasingly being used as a customer service platform, so if you want to level up your DMs, start using voice & video replies to give your readers all of the warms & fuzzies – and make yourself super memorable.
Influencer marketing isn’t going anywhere! But micro-influencers will start to have more influence than IG celebs. They have a more intimate connection with their audience, and that trust factor is Herculean when it comes to making purchasing decisions.
We’re not going to lie… we don’t love spending our time on Facebook.
But this platform has phenomenal targeting capabilities, which is nothing to sneeze at!
Here’s how to make the most of your content here –
- Post top notch content. It doesn’t have to be super polished, but it does have to be helpful and relevant! Live videos outperform every other type of content – it’s up 30% over and above regular video, so definitely something to consider.
- Let the post grow organically for 1-2 days.
- Boost the post, and…
- This is where the magic happens! Serve up retargeted ads to the readers that have engaged with your post. You’ve just hand-picked the most interested members of your audience, which is miles better than throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping that something sticks.
People are craving community more than ever, and Facebook provides the opportunity to deliver that in spades.
Groups are the perfect place to genuinely connect with your audience – and that’s pure gold.
Nurture your readers by discussing shared interests, asking and answering questions, and building relationships through conversation – in your own community, rather than on the news feed.
We know… it feels like we’re back in 2012, right? LinkedIn is still around, friends! And it’s come a long ways.
It’s a first-rate platform if you’re a business owner that works with other businesses.
- It’s not going to last… but right now, LinkedIn looks a lot like Facebook and Instagram did before all of the algorithm changes. There’s nothing like easy organic reach!
We’re predicting a surge of users on platforms outside of Facebook and Instagram for exactly that reason, so it’s a great time to hop on it if you aren’t there yet.
- Creating quality content for LinkedIn gives you a wonderful opportunity to go viral, because when a user likes or comments on your post it’ll show up in their feed too. Huge win!
If you haven’t heard of Tik Tok, don’t worry. It’s probably because you’re geriatric, like us. ? KIDDING.
Okay, actually not kidding. Over half of the users on this platform are under the age of 25, so it’s one for the younguns.
If you’re looking to impact a younger audience, this one is worth keeping an eye on. It’s fun, energetic, and creative – and just FEELS GOOD all around.
(Maybe it’s because there’s zero salesy content over here? Hmmm.)
We couldn’t leave 2019 without mentioning the new kid in town, and we’re so excited to see what happens here this year.
One more thing…
Social media is a game changer for tiny businesses. Ten, fifteen, twenty years ago you wouldn’t have had the chance to play with the big guys – but today, marketing opportunities abound.
That being said, social is not the be-all and end-all of marketing. It brings a host of overload, addiction, time management, and mental health issues – not to mention the privacy concerns.
The reason that we’re pausing to mention this is because more and more people are starting to temporarily leave social media to detox…. which, quite frankly, is a wise choice.
That means that putting all of your marketing eggs in the social media basket may not be the wisest choice. Something to keep in mind as you plan your marketing for the new year!
